Book One resolves the Cydonia discovery and the immediate crisis it creates for the Borderleap Initiative. It does not resolve the larger question the discovery raises — and Book Two picks that question up rather than starting a new one.
The next mission moves outward from Mars toward Jupiter's moon Ganymede, following a thread the Initiative would rather have kept quiet: the possibility that whatever reached Cydonia four billion years ago did not stop there, and that the Initiative's own crew — human, Continuant, and otherwise — is about to find out how far the pattern really extends.
Readers of Book One will recognize familiar names carrying the weight of what they learned at Cydonia into a much colder, much farther setting. New pressures, new territory, same unresolved question: which of the intelligences converging on this mission actually originates from Earth.
Book Two will make a lot more sense — and land a lot harder — if you start at Cydonia.
